History of Owensville
Owensville got its name from an early business owner named Frank Owens. A local story says that Frank Owens and a blacksmith named Edward Luster decided on the name in 1847. They were playing a game of horseshoes.
One version of the story says Luster won the game. But he thought "Owensville" sounded better than "Lusterville." Another story says Owens won the game instead. The first post office opened in 1856. The town was officially planned out in 1886 when the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad arrived.
Geography and Location
Owensville covers a total area of about 2.64 square miles (6.73 square kilometers). All of this area is land.
The city is located about 70.8 miles (114.0 km) southwest of St. Louis. It is also about 55.5 miles (89.3 km) southeast of Jefferson City. You can find it about 22.3 miles (35.9 km) north of Cuba.
