Gasconade County is a county in the middle-eastern part of Missouri. In 2020, about 14,794 people lived here. Its main town, called the county seat, is Hermann. It has been the county seat since 1842. The county got its name from the Gasconade River.

The county is located on the south side of the Missouri River. This river was once the main way to travel in the state. Gasconade County is part of an area known as the Missouri Rhineland. This area is special for growing grapes and making wine. Because of its unique conditions, the Hermann area was named an American Viticultural Area (AVA) in 1983. The southern part of the county is also in the larger Ozark Highlands AVA, which started in 1987.

Where the Name Comes From

Gasconade County and the Gasconade River got their names from French-speaking settlers. These settlers came from the Gascony region in southwestern France. They arrived during the time when France ruled this part of North America, known as New France (Louisiana Territory).

An article from 1916 in the Missouri Historical Review explained it. It said the name comes from "Gascon," which means someone from Gascony. Gascony was a unique area in France with special cultural roots.
