What Was PXG?
The name "PXG" was a clever shortcut. It stood for the three most popular home video game consoles at the time. These were the PlayStation 2, Xbox, and GameCube.
In each episode, Kentaro Suyama teamed up with his animated helper, "Game Girl." Haruka Kuroda provided the voice for Game Girl. Together, they would review different video games and gaming accessories.
Original Series (2005 - 2006)
The first series of PXG had a special schedule. Each day of the week focused on a different part of the gaming world.
Daily Shows in Series One
- Monday: Big in Japan: This part of the show looked at the newest and most popular games and systems from Japan. For example, they talked about the launch of the Nintendo DS or the PlayStation Portable.
- Tuesday: Mobile Madness: This segment was all about handheld gaming devices and their games. The first half showed off cool accessories and gave sneak peeks of new games. The second half featured full game reviews.
- Wednesday: Konsole Kids: This section focused on games for home consoles. It included a fun game show held inside a caravan. Gamers would show off their best game replays. Kentaro would then rate their performance. If he liked the replay, the gamer would win a pretend holiday to a tropical island! If not, they would face a silly, funny consequence.
- Thursday: Easy PC: The first part of this segment reviewed a computer game. The second part gave quick reviews of several games you could play for free online.
- Friday: On Fridays, all the shorter shows from Monday to Thursday were combined into one longer, half-hour episode. This longer show also included a special part called "Top of the Chops." In "Top of the Chops," five popular games were reviewed. They also revealed the answers to questions asked throughout the week. Plus, there were video game jokes and sneak peeks of upcoming games, like Zelda: Twilight Princess. Sometimes, this segment even showed videos of people dressed up as their favorite game characters!
Second Series (2007 - 2008)
In 2007, PXG came back for a second series. The show's format changed a bit.
Changes in Series Two
- The daily schedule was different. Monday became "Konsole Kids," Wednesday became "Big in Japan," Thursday became "Top of the Chops," and Friday became "Easy PC."
- "Top of the Chops" was also very different. It now only featured a review of one game instead of five.
- "Game Girl" was not in this season at all.
The second series was designed to include more content made by the viewers themselves. Dominic Gardiner, who was the director of Jetix UK, said these changes were made to "give kids a greater sense of ownership of the show." This meant kids could feel more like the show belonged to them.
