Early Life and Moving to New York
Pablo Ferro was born in a place called Antilla, in Cuba. He grew up on a quiet farm. When he was a teenager, his family moved to New York in the United States.
Learning and Starting Out
Pablo Ferro taught himself how to make animation by reading a book. In the mid-1950s, he started working as a freelance artist in New York. This means he worked for different companies on various projects.
He got his first steady job at a company that made commercials. There, he met Bill Tytla, a former animator from Disney. Bill Tytla became a helpful teacher and friend to Pablo. Another person he worked with was Stan Lee, who later became famous for creating Marvel Comics superheroes. Pablo and Stan Lee even made some science fiction comics together!
In 1961, Pablo became a partner in a company called Ferro, Mogubgub and Schwartz. Then, in 1964, he started his very own company, Pablo Ferro Films.
Amazing Work in Movies and Commercials
Pablo Ferro created many different kinds of designs for films. He designed the cool opening titles for Stanley Kubrick's movie Dr. Strangelove. He also created the special multi-screen images for the original The Thomas Crown Affair.
He was a pioneer, meaning he was one of the first to use quick-cut editing and show many images on screen at once. His unique visual style has influenced many people in movies, TV shows, cartoons, commercials, and even books.
Pablo taught himself filmmaking. He first became well-known for animations like the first colorful NBC Peacock logo. He also created special visual shows, like a film for the Singer Pavilion at the 1964 New York World's Fair. This was one of the first times film projectors were used to create multiple images on different screens at the same time.
His designs have appeared in over 100 films! Some of these include Woman of Straw, Bullitt, The Russians Are Coming, the Russians Are Coming, Philadelphia, Married to the Mob, Beetlejuice, and Men in Black. His hand-drawn opening parts have been in movies like Stop Making Sense and The Addams Family. He also made trailers (short previews) for films like A Clockwork Orange.
Pablo worked closely with his friend, film director Hal Ashby, on several movies. These included Harold and Maude and Being There. He even helped direct a concert film for The Rolling Stones called Let's Spend the Night Together. Pablo also worked with director Gus Van Sant on To Die For and Good Will Hunting.
Besides directing and producing his own movie, Me, Myself & I (1992), he also acted in a few films. He was the supervising editor for The Night They Raided Minsky's. In 1984, he was nominated for an award for his work as supervising editor on Michael Jackson's music video "Beat It". This was the first time an award was given for that type of work! Pablo also made many short films.
Awards and Recognition
Pablo Ferro won more than 70 awards from around the world. These include many Clios, which are important awards for advertising. He also received a DGA Excellence in Film Award and several Lifetime Achievement awards. These awards celebrate his long and successful career.
