Pablo Milanés Arias (born February 24, 1943 – died November 22, 2022) was a famous Cuban musician. He was a talented guitar player and singer. Pablo Milanés was one of the key people who started a new style of Cuban music called nueva trova. He created this style along with other musicians like Silvio Rodríguez and Noel Nicola. His music was special because it mixed traditional Cuban sounds, like Trova and Son, with new ideas.

Life and Music Journey
Pablo Milanés, often called Pablito, moved with his family from Bayamo to Havana in 1950. He studied music at a very good school in Havana. He first performed in public in 1956. By the time he was 15, he was part of Havana's music scene, playing with musicians who performed a style called "filin" (a type of Cuban romantic song).
Early Challenges and New Music
Even though he supported the Cuban Revolution, Pablo Milanés faced a difficult time in 1965. He was sent to an agricultural camp called UMAP in Camagüey. He felt this was unfair and left the camp to speak out against it. Because of this, he was put in prison for a short time. He was later released when the camp was closed due to pressure from people around the world.
In 1969, he joined a group of young musicians called the Grupo de Experimentación Sonora. Many of these musicians helped create the nueva trova movement. This new music style officially began with a concert by Pablo, Silvio Rodriguez, and Noel Nicola in 1968. For many years, nueva trova was a very popular music style in Cuba.
Musical Achievements and Style
Pablo Milanés released his first recording in 1973. After that, he made more than 40 solo albums and worked with many other artists from Cuba, Latin America, and Spain. His first album with his own songs came out in 1976. Some of his most famous albums were "El guerrero," "Yo me quedo," and "Comienzo y final de una verde mañana," which he released in the early 1980s.
Pablo Milanés was known for staying true to the traditional roots of Cuban music. However, he was also open to different musical styles, like Brazilian music and Blues. His songs covered many topics, from strong political messages to beautiful love songs. He even set poems by famous Cuban writers like José Martí and Nicolás Guillén to music. Some of his biggest musical inspirations included María Teresa Vera, Benny Moré, and even Johann Sebastian Bach.
Later Life and Views
Since 2004, Pablo Milanés lived in Vigo, Spain, with his Spanish wife and their two sons. In 2014, he received a kidney transplant, with his wife donating the organ.
After moving to Spain, Pablo Milanés sometimes spoke about things he thought could be better in the Cuban government. However, he still believed in the goals of the Cuban Revolution. In 2011, it was reported that his willingness to speak openly caused some tension with other musicians like Silvio Rodriguez.
