Pacific City was once a small town in Pacific County, located in the U.S. state of Washington. Today, it is known as a ghost town, meaning it no longer exists as a populated place.

The Story of Pacific City

Pacific City was first planned and laid out around 1848. This was a time when many new settlements were starting up in the American West. People hoped these new towns would grow and become important centers.

Early Importance

When Pacific County was officially created in 1851, Pacific City was chosen as its very first county seat. A county seat is like the main town or capital of a county, where the government offices are located. This made Pacific City an important place for a short time.

A Short-Lived Town

However, Pacific City's time as a county seat was very brief. Soon after it was established, a military fort was built nearby at Cape Disappointment. This new fort changed where people settled and built their lives. Because of this, Pacific City quickly faded away and was dissolved.

Post Office Days

Even though it didn't last long, Pacific City did have its own post office. This post office opened in 1850. It helped people send and receive mail in the area. The post office continued to operate for about 15 years, finally closing down in 1865. After that, Pacific City became a ghost town, a memory of a place that once was.
