Patricio "Paddy" Martinez (1881– August 26, 1969) was an American prospector and shepherd. A prospector is someone who searches for valuable minerals. In 1950, Paddy made a huge discovery. He found uranium at Haystack Mesa. This area is in the San Juan Basin near Grants, New Mexico.

Paddy's find was the very first in the Grants Uranium District. It started a big "uranium boom" that lasted for almost 30 years. During this time, the San Juan Basin produced 60% of all the uranium in the United States. This uranium was worth more than $25 billion!

Paddy's Big Discovery

Paddy Martinez found uranium in 1950. This discovery was on land owned by the Santa Fe Railroad. His find led to the creation of the Haystack mine. The railroad and the Anaconda Mining Company hired Paddy. They paid him $400 each month to be a uranium scout. This was a very good salary back then.

After his discovery, the town of Grants became a "yellowcake boomtown." Yellowcake is a type of uranium concentrate. The town's population quickly grew from 2,200 to 50,000 people in just a few months. The mining boom continued for decades. It finally ended in the 1980s. The Santa Fe Railroad kept paying Paddy Martinez $250 a month until he passed away.

Paddy first found a low-grade uranium ore called carnotite in 1950. He claimed 160 acres of land. Later, he explored Haystack Mountain more. There, he found high-grade uranium ore. This made him famous across the country for his important discovery.

Paddy's Life Story

Paddy Martinez was born in the village of Pinedale, New Mexico. He and his wife, Mary, had 14 children.

Paddy was a Navajo man of Mexican descent. He was also a native New Mexican. He became well-known because of his uranium discovery. Famous magazines like Time, Life, True West, and Reader's Digest wrote articles about him. Paddy could speak many languages. He knew Navajo, Laguna (Keresan), Spanish, and English. He was also a medicine man and a respected leader in his community.

Besides prospecting, Paddy worked in other jobs. He was a law officer on the Navajo reservation. He also managed a mountain sheep camp. And he helped recruit workers for carrot farms.

Paddy's tombstone is in the Grants Memorial Cemetery. It simply says, "Paddy Martinez 1881 - 1969 Uranium Pioneer." His grave is close to Paddy Martinez Park, where children play.
