Paint Creek is a stream in Iowa, USA. It flows directly into the Upper Mississippi River. This creek starts in the middle of Allamakee County, Iowa, near the city of Waukon. The area of land that drains into Paint Creek is about 85.5 square miles (221 square kilometers).

While some parts of Paint Creek near Waukon are still natural, much of the creek within the city has been covered up or put into pipes underground. Paint Creek joins the Mississippi River about 6 miles (9.7 km) north of Marquette, Iowa.

Paint Creek's Journey

The way Paint Creek flows changes as it moves from west to east.

From Waukon to the Mississippi

Near its start, in the higher areas, Paint Creek might only have water flowing on the surface after it rains. But as you travel east towards the Mississippi River, the creek cuts deep into the land. Here, it becomes a strong, cold stream that always has water, even during very dry times. This constant flow comes from natural springs that feed the creek.

Canyons and Cliffs

By the time Paint Creek reaches Waterville, it flows through a narrow valley. This valley is surrounded by tall, almost straight cliffs that are about 150 feet (46 meters) high. As the creek gets closer to the Mississippi River, it has carved even deeper into the rock, creating a valley that is about 350 feet (107 meters) deep.

The Paint Creek Area

The land around Paint Creek is divided into two main parts: Big Paint Creek and Little Paint Creek. Once the creek leaves Waukon, it flows through mostly countryside.

Farming and the Environment

Some farming methods in the area have caused soil to wash away, which is called erosion. This extra soil then gets carried by the creek into the Mississippi River. Experts are working on plans to help stop this problem and protect the river.

How Paint Creek Got Its Name

Paint Creek gets its name from a place called Paint Rock Bluff. This bluff is near Waukon Junction, Iowa. Long ago, it was an important landmark for boats traveling on the Mississippi River. It was named because of the old Native American paintings and petroglyphs (rock carvings) found on it.

Nature and Fun Activities

Even though it's called Paint Creek, a large part of the Yellow River State Forest is actually in the Paint Creek area. In this forest, you can find trails for hiking and horseback riding, places to camp, and other fun outdoor activities. The area is very beautiful, with rugged limestone cliffs and thick forests.

Local Community

The name "Paint" is also used for some local places, especially churches like the East Paint and West Paint Lutheran churches. There is also a private Christian campground in the area.
