Valladolid - Palacio de Santa Cruz
Santa Cruz Palace

The Palacio de Santa Cruz is a beautiful old palace in Valladolid, Spain. It is one of the very first buildings in Spain to show the new style of the Renaissance. This was a time when people rediscovered old Roman and Greek art and ideas.

Building the palace started in 1486. But in 1490, a famous architect named Lorenzo Vázquez de Segovia took over the project. He finished building the palace in 1491.

History of the Santa Cruz Palace

The idea for the Santa Cruz Palace came from a very important person named Cardinal Mendoza. He wanted to build a college here. Many people think this palace is the oldest building in Spain that truly shows the Renaissance style.

Who Designed the Palace?

Lorenzo Vázquez de Segovia was the main architect who finished the palace. He was very talented. Some people wonder if certain fancy details on the outside of the palace were added later. However, most experts agree that important parts, like the main entrance, were part of Vázquez's original plan.

Unique Features of the Palace

One interesting thing about the palace is that its front isn't perfectly balanced, or "symmetrical." This means if you drew a line down the middle, both sides wouldn't be exactly the same. Even so, the main doorway is a wonderful example of Vázquez's design.

You can see a similar doorway on another palace built by the same architect. This other palace belonged to the Dukes of Medinaceli. They were also part of the powerful Mendoza family, just like Cardinal Mendoza. This shows how important and influential the Mendoza family was back then.
