The pale-billed sicklebill (Drepanornis bruijnii) is a special bird from the family Paradisaeidae. This family is famous for its beautiful birds-of-paradise.

What's in a Name?

The scientific name for this bird is Drepanornis bruijnii. The first part, "Drepanornis," means "sickle bird." This name comes from the bird's bill, which looks like a sickle. The second part, "bruijnii," honors a Dutch merchant named Antonie Augustus Bruijn.

Pale-billed sicklebills are medium-sized birds. They usually grow to about 35 centimeters (13.7 inches) long. Their bodies are mostly a dull brownish-olive color on top and grayish-brown underneath. Their heads are dark brown.

One of their most interesting features is the bare, lead-grey skin around their eyes. This skin covers much of their head. They also have two shiny tufts of feathers that stick up above their heads.

Unique Features of the Male

Male pale-billed sicklebills have a pale, ivory-colored bill that curves downwards, just like a sickle. They also have special feathers on their chest and belly. The feathers highest on their chest are dark grey with shiny coppery-red tips. Other feathers on their sides have a greenish-copper shine.

Differences in Females

Female pale-billed sicklebills look similar to males but are a bit lighter in weight. They do not have the shiny, iridescent feathers that males do. Females also have the bare facial patches, but they are not as large as on the males. Instead of a plain grayish underside, females have stripes from their chin all the way to their rump. Their wings and lower neck are also a lighter brownish-olive color.

Both male and female pale-billed sicklebills have a reddish-brown tail. Their legs and feet are a purplish-lead grey, and their eyes are dark brown.

What Does It Sound Like?

The pale-billed sicklebill makes musical whistling sounds. It also has some high-pitched notes in its calls.

Where Do They Live and What Do They Eat?

Pale-billed sicklebills live in the lowland rainforests of northern and northwestern New Guinea. They mostly eat fruits and small creatures like insects and spiders, which are called arthropods.

Protecting the Pale-billed Sicklebill

Even though their habitat is shrinking due to deforestation (when forests are cut down), the pale-billed sicklebill is currently listed as "Least Concern" by the IUCN Red List. This means they are not in immediate danger of disappearing. They are also protected under Appendix II of CITES, which helps control trade in these birds.
