Palmas is a special area, called a barrio, located in the town of Arroyo, Puerto Rico. In 2010, about 3,789 people lived there. It is a part of Puerto Rico, which is a territory of the United States.
History of Palmas
After the Spanish–American War ended in 1898, Spain gave Puerto Rico to the United States. This happened because of a special agreement called the Treaty of Paris of 1898. Puerto Rico then became an unincorporated territory of the United States. This means it is a part of the U.S. but does not have all the same rights as a state.
In 1899, the United States Department of War took a count of all the people in Puerto Rico. This count is called a census. The census found that the combined population of Palmas and two nearby barrios, Ancones and Guásimas, was 596 people. Over the years, the population of Palmas has changed:
- In 1950, about 1,398 people lived there.
- By 1980, the population grew to 2,361.
- In 1990, it was 3,167 people.
- In 2000, the population reached 4,090.
- By 2010, it was 3,789 people.
Palmas as a Special Community
Since 2001, Puerto Rico has had a law to help communities that face many challenges. These challenges include high levels of poverty and not having enough resources or opportunities. By 2008, there were 742 places on a list of these "special communities." In 2004, Palmas barrio was added to this list. This means that Palmas is recognized as a community that needs extra help and support to improve the lives of its residents.
