Papastratos facts for kids

Papastratos (which in Greek is Παπαστράτος Ανώνυμη Βιομηχανική Εταιρεία Σιγαρέττων) is a well-known Greek company. It is the largest maker and seller of cigarettes in Greece. The company has a long history, starting way back in 1930.

A Long History of Making Products

Papastratos was started by a person named Evangelos Papastratos in 1930. Their very first factory was in a city called Piraeus in Greece.

Growing and Expanding

The company grew quickly and even opened factories in other countries. In 1933, they opened a second factory in Berlin, Germany. However, this factory had to close in 1936 because of pressure from the Nazi government at that time. Later, in 1937, Papastratos opened a third factory in Cairo, Egypt. This factory operated for many years before closing in 1955.

Helping Communities Grow

During its busiest times, Papastratos was one of the biggest industrial companies in Greece. It was so important that entire towns, like Agrinio, grew and became successful because of the tobacco farms that supplied Papastratos' factories.

Modern Times and New Ownership

In 1975, Papastratos began working together with a large international company called Philip Morris. This partnership grew stronger over the years.

Becoming Part of a Bigger Family

Eventually, in 2003, Philip Morris bought Papastratos. This meant Papastratos became part of the larger Philip Morris International family of companies.

A New, Big Factory

In 2009, a brand new factory was opened in the Aspropyrgos area of Greece. Building this factory was a huge investment, costing more than €100 million. This modern factory can produce an amazing 20 billion cigarettes every year! Papastratos also owns a large warehouse for tobacco in Agrinio.
