In 1505, the Polish King Alexander Jagiellon gave the village to the Roman Catholic Diocese of Chełmno, which is a church area led by a bishop. At that time, Papowo Biskupie was part of the Polish Chełmno Voivodeship.
Later, in 1772, during a time called the Partitions of Poland, the village was taken over by Prussia. From 1871, it became part of Germany. However, after World War I ended in 1918, Poland became an independent country again, and Papowo Biskupie returned to Poland.
During World War II, when Germany occupied Poland, a special camp was set up in the village. This camp was a subcamp of a larger prisoner-of-war camp called Stalag XX-A. People were made to work there during the war.
