The Pariolius armillatus is a small type of catfish with three barbels, which are like whiskers around its mouth. This fish is found in the upper Amazon basin, a large river system in Brazil and Peru. It is the only known species in its group, called Pariolius.

About the Pariolius Catfish

This little fish is quite small, growing to about 3.2 centimeters (or 1.3 inches) long. This measurement is called "standard length" (SL), which means it's measured from the tip of its nose to the base of its tail fin.

Where It Lives

The Pariolius armillatus lives in creeks and streams. It prefers places with sand and gravel at the bottom. You can find it in parts of the stream where the water flows quite fast. It also lives in slower parts of the same streams, especially where there aren't many water plants.

What It Eats

This catfish mainly eats larvae of insects. Its favorite food is the larvae of Trichoptera, which are also known as caddisflies. These are small insect larvae that often build cases out of bits of sand or plants.
