History of Parkerfield
Parkerfield became an official city on March 16, 2004. This meant it could have its own local government. Soon after, on March 30, elections were held for a mayor and city council members.
The idea to become a city started because people living there were worried. The nearby city of Arkansas City wanted to expand and include their area. Residents felt that Arkansas City's rules were too strict and its taxes were too high. So, they decided to fight this plan. They even hired a lawyer to help them.
On January 20, 2004, the residents officially asked the county to let them form their own city. The county leaders, called the Board of County Commissioners, agreed on March 9. This allowed Parkerfield to become its own independent city.
