History of Parkman, Maine

Early Beginnings and Naming the Town

Parkman was first known as Plantation Number Five, Sixth Range. A wealthy man from Boston named Samuel Parkman bought this land. In 1822, the area officially became a town. It was named Parkman in honor of its owner, Samuel Parkman.

Farming and Industry in Parkman

Samuel Parkman's son, George Parkman, inherited the town. He visited Parkman every year. Much of the town's land has very good soil for farming. In 1837, farmers grew 6,018 bushels of wheat here. By 1859, Parkman was well-known for making butter and cheese. Later, around 1886, the town also had several sawmills and a gristmill. Sawmills cut wood, and gristmills grind grain into flour.
