Parmelia is a suburb located south of Perth, Western Australia. It is part of the City of Kwinana.

What's in a Name?
Parmelia is one of several suburbs in Kwinana named after ships. The suburb gets its name from the Parmelia, which was a very important ship. In June 1829, it was the first ship to bring settlers to Western Australia. These settlers came to start a new colony at the Swan River. The ship also carried the new Governor, James Stirling, and his wife, Ellen.

Parmelia is known as a family-friendly suburb. Many young families and retirees live here.

Chisham Avenue is a main street that runs through Parmelia. It has many homes built in the 1970s. These houses were once lived in by managers and executives from the BP oil refinery.

The Kwinana Recquatic is a large centre with many facilities. It has a gym, a swimming pool, a spa, and a sauna. You can also find courts for basketball, indoor soccer, and other sports. This centre is getting a big upgrade to become Kwinana's top fitness spot.
Kwinana Adventure Park
Right across from the Kwinana Marketplace shopping centre is the Kwinana Adventure Park. This park was built by the City of Kwinana and cost $5.2 million. It has a huge play area of 11,000 m2 (120,000 sq ft). This makes it one of the biggest public playgrounds in Western Australia!
Shopping and Community
Parmelia is at the centre of a big project to improve the city area. This project is worth $340 million.
Kwinana Marketplace
The Kwinana Marketplace Shopping Centre is being updated and renovated. A new owner, Woolworths, is leading this work.
New Community Facilities
The redevelopment also includes several new buildings for the community:
- A new library and resource centre, costing $22 million.
- A youth space, costing $7.5 million.
- The new Admiral Hotel.
Transport and Development
Parmelia is seeing improvements in transport and housing.
Metronet Project
The Metronet project is upgrading the train line that goes through Parmelia. It will also improve the Kwinana railway station. These changes are expected to make the area even better for living. The government received money for this project in May 2017.
New Housing
A property company called Meridian Group is working with the City of Kwinana. They are designing and building new homes in Parmelia. These include houses, townhouses, villas, and apartments. Construction has already started on some new double-storey houses and townhouses.
Famous Residents
Parmelia was once home to Australian supermodel and actress Megan Gale. She is also known for being a brand ambassador for the department store David Jones.
