Pascal and Maximus are two awesome animal characters from the Disney movie Tangled (2010). They don't talk, but they are super expressive and funny! Pascal is a tiny, colorful chameleon, and Maximus is a brave and determined horse.
They are best friends and helpers to the main characters, Rapunzel and Flynn Rider. You can see them in the original movie, the short film Tangled Ever After (2012), and the TV shows Tangled: Before Ever After and Rapunzel's Tangled Adventure.
The directors, Nathan Greno and Byron Howard, created them. Frank Welker makes all the cool sounds for both characters in Tangled. Later, other voice actors like Dee Bradley Baker also voiced them. Pascal and Maximus are known for being a hilarious duo who often steal the show!

Who Are Pascal and Maximus?
Pascal is Rapunzel's loyal pet and best friend. He lives with her in Mother Gothel's tall, hidden tower. He's always there to cheer Rapunzel up or show when he's unhappy about something. He changes colors to show his feelings, which is pretty cool!
Maximus is a powerful police horse. He was first determined to catch the thief Flynn Rider. But after meeting Rapunzel, he becomes friends with Flynn too. He's very smart and acts a lot like a human, even though he's a horse!
The creators wanted Rapunzel to have a friend in her lonely tower, so they made Pascal a chameleon. They thought a reptile would fit her unique personality. Maximus was first planned to be a very serious horse. But the animators decided to make him funnier and more lovable. The idea for them not to talk came from famous silent movie actors like Charlie Chaplin.
Critics really love Pascal and Maximus. They often say these characters are the funniest parts of the movie. People enjoy how expressive and charming they are without saying a single word.
Where Do They Appear?
Tangled (2010)
Pascal is introduced as Rapunzel's best friend. He lives with her in Mother Gothel's tower. He's the only one who knows how sad Rapunzel is about being stuck inside.
Maximus is a police horse chasing Flynn Rider, who stole a crown. Flynn hides in Rapunzel's tower, and that's where he meets Pascal. Pascal and Flynn don't get along at first!
Rapunzel wants to see the "floating lights" (lanterns) on her birthday. She makes a deal with Flynn: he takes her to see the lights, and she'll give him back his crown. Maximus keeps searching for Flynn, and accidentally lets Mother Gothel know Rapunzel has left the tower.
When Maximus finally catches up, Rapunzel convinces him to stop chasing Flynn for a while. Pascal helps make sure Flynn and Rapunzel get along. In the kingdom, Rapunzel, Flynn, and Pascal go on a boat to see the lanterns. Maximus has to wait on shore.
Later, Maximus helps Flynn escape from jail. He then takes Flynn to Gothel's tower. After Rapunzel is safe, Pascal and Maximus move to the kingdom of Corona with Rapunzel and Flynn. Maximus even becomes a knight and the Captain of the Guards!
Tangled Ever After (2012)
This short film takes place after the main movie. Pascal and Maximus are the ring bearers at Rapunzel and Flynn's wedding.
During the ceremony, Maximus sneezes, and the wedding rings fly out a window! Pascal and Maximus sneak out to get them back. They face many funny challenges trying to get the rings. They finally get them back, but they end up covered in tar! They return just in time, but then accidentally cause the wedding cake to roll away.
Tangled: Before Ever After (2017)
In this TV movie, Pascal lives in the Castle of Corona with Rapunzel and Eugene (Flynn Rider's real name). Pascal even creates a fake Rapunzel to trick Eugene when the real Rapunzel sneaks out.
Maximus is ridden by Eugene in a race against Rapunzel. He also helps Rapunzel and Cassandra when they sneak out at night. He's always there to help them out of tricky situations.
Rapunzel's Tangled Adventure (2017-2020)
Pascal continues to live with Rapunzel in Corona. He sometimes feels like he doesn't belong in the castle. He even runs away to Rapunzel's old tower in the forest.
In one episode, we learn Pascal's backstory. As a baby, his mother sent him away to escape a dangerous snake. He floated down a waterfall and found young Rapunzel singing. He climbed her tower, but the snake followed him and bit him. Young Rapunzel used her magical hair to heal him. She welcomed him as her best friend, so they would never be alone.
When Pascal returns to the tower as an adult, the same snake attacks him again. But now he's brave because of his time with Rapunzel. He fights off the snake until Rapunzel arrives.
Maximus is still the best horse for the guards in Corona. He helps catch criminals. He also seems to like a female horse named Fidella!
Video Games
Both Pascal and Maximus appear in the Nintendo DS game Tangled: The Video Game (2010). Players can interact with them. There's even a fun minigame called "Pascal's Colors/Melody Match" inspired by Pascal.
