The Passalus interruptus is a fascinating type of beetle that belongs to the Passalidae family. These beetles are sometimes called "patent-leather beetles" because of their shiny, smooth appearance. They are known for their unique look and interesting habits.
What Does This Beetle Look Like?
The Passalus interruptus beetle is quite large, usually growing to be about 35 to 50 millimeters long. That's about the length of a small hot dog! Female beetles are a bit smaller than the males. Their bodies are long and almost shaped like a cylinder, and they are completely black, giving them a very sleek look.
One cool feature of this beetle is the crooked horn it has on its head, right between its eyes. Its mouthparts, called mandibles, are very strong and have three teeth at the end, plus one in the middle. These powerful jaws help the beetle with its diet. The hard outer wings, called elytra, have deep grooves or lines on them. This beetle mainly eats tree sap, which is the sugary liquid found inside trees.
Where Does This Beetle Live?
You can find the Passalus interruptus beetle in parts of Central and South America. They live in countries like Panama and French Guiana. These beetles prefer to live in mixed deciduous forests. These are forests where many trees lose their leaves in the fall, and there's a mix of different tree types. They like these environments because they provide plenty of trees for them to feed on.
