The Oscaecilia bassleri, also known as the Pastaza River caecilian, is a special type of caecilian. Caecilians are amphibians, like frogs and salamanders, but they look more like worms or snakes. They don't have legs! This animal belongs to the Caeciliidae family.
This caecilian is found in the lower parts of the Amazonian slopes and the western Amazon Basin. You can find it in countries like Ecuador and Peru. It might also live in Bolivia and Colombia. The name bassleri was given to honor Harvey Bassler, who was an American geologist and paleontologist.
Where the Pastaza River Caecilian Lives
The Pastaza River caecilian is a subterranean animal. This means it lives underground. It prefers to live in thick, natural tropical rainforests. These forests are often called "primary" rainforests because they haven't been changed much by humans.
This caecilian lives at different heights, from about 100 meters (328 feet) to 800 meters (2,625 feet) above sea level. Living underground helps it stay safe and find food.
