Daniel Patrick Harrington Jr. (born August 13, 1929 – died January 6, 2016) was an American actor. He won an Emmy Award for his work. Many people remember him best as Dwayne Schneider, the friendly building superintendent on the TV show One Day at a Time. His father, Pat Harrington Sr., was also an actor.

Early Life and Education
Pat Harrington Jr. was born in Manhattan, New York City, on August 13, 1929. His father was a performer who worked in vaudeville and on Broadway.
Harrington went to a Catholic military school. Later, he graduated from Fordham University in 1950. He earned a bachelor's degree and then a master's degree in political philosophy. During the Korean War, he served in the United States Air Force as an intelligence officer. He reached the rank of first lieutenant.
After college and military service, he decided to become an entertainer, just like his father. He started working at NBC in New York City. Then, he began acting on stage and traveled around North America with different plays. Eventually, he performed on Broadway.
Acting Career Highlights
Pat Harrington Jr. became well-known in the 1950s. He was part of Steve Allen's TV comedy group called "Men on the Street." This group included other famous actors like Don Knotts.
He often appeared on The Jack Paar Show in the mid-1950s. On this show, he played a funny Italian golf pro named Guido Panzini. From 1959 to 1960, he had a repeating role as Pat Hannigan on Danny Thomas's TV show, The Danny Thomas Show.
In the mid-1960s, he was a guest star on many TV shows. These included The Bing Crosby Show and The Man from U.N.C.L.E.. He even played his character Guido Panzini again in an episode of McHale's Navy. He also appeared on two episodes of The Munsters.
In 1967, Harrington acted in the Elvis Presley movie Easy Come, Easy Go. He also made a funny parody of Get Smart in an episode of F Troop. In that episode, he played a secret agent named "B Wise." From 1971 to 1974, he appeared in 11 episodes of the legal drama Owen Marshall: Counselor at Law. He played District Attorney Charlie Giannetta.
Voice Acting Roles
Pat Harrington Jr. also used his voice for many cartoon characters. In 1967, he was the voice of Ray Palmer/the Atom and Roy Harper/Speedy on The Superman/Aquaman Hour of Adventure.
From 1965 to 1969, he voiced both The Inspector and his sidekick Deux Deux. These characters were in 34 animated episodes of their own series. These cartoons later became part of The Pink Panther Show. He also voiced Jon's father in A Garfield Christmas Special.
Dwayne Schneider and Later Work
In 1974, he appeared with Peter Falk in an episode of Columbo. However, Pat Harrington Jr. is most famous for playing Dwayne Schneider. This was the building superintendent on the TV show One Day at a Time, which ran from 1975 to 1984.
For his role as Schneider, he won an Emmy Award and a Golden Globe Award. After the show ended, he played Schneider again in commercials for Trak Auto Parts. In 2006, he appeared in an episode of The King of Queens.
Harrington also appeared on two TV shows starring his former co-star, Valerie Bertinelli. He was on Sydney in 1990. His last acting role was in 2012 on the show Hot in Cleveland.
Personal Life
Pat Harrington Jr. married Marjorie Ann Gortner in 1955. They had four children together, including tennis player Mike Harrington. They divorced in 1985. In 2001, he married Sally Cleaver, who worked in insurance.
Later Years and Passing
In November 2015, Harrington had a fall. He had been dealing with health issues for some time. He spent three weeks in a hospital and nursing home. His children announced that he passed away on January 6, 2016, at the age of 86. He died on the birthday of his One Day at a Time co-star, Bonnie Franklin, who had passed away earlier in 2013.
