The Patiala and East Punjab States Union (PEPSU) was a special state in India that existed for a short time. It was formed by joining several small kingdoms, called princely states, in the Punjab region. This happened on July 15, 1948. PEPSU officially became a state of India in 1950.
The main city and capital of PEPSU was Patiala. The last ruler of Patiala, Maharaja Yadvindra Singh, became the Governor of PEPSU. The President of India chose the Governor. People in PEPSU also elected their own government. They chose 60 members for a state assembly. The first election for this assembly was on January 6, 1952. The Congress Party won 26 seats, and the Akali Dal won 19 seats.
The End of PEPSU
PEPSU did not last very long. On November 1, 1956, it joined with the larger Punjab state. Later, on November 1, 1966, a new state called Haryana was created. Some parts of what used to be PEPSU, like the areas around Jind and Narnaul, are now part of Haryana.
