Early Life and Stage Career
Patrice Wymore was born Patricia Wymore in Miltonvale, Kansas. Her family were vaudeville performers, which meant they traveled and put on shows. She started touring with them when she was just six years old.
By the time she was an adult, Patrice was a skilled dancer and had a lovely singing voice. In 1947, she tried out for a show in New York City called Up in Central Park and got a part.
Still using the name "Patricia Wymore," she then starred in a Broadway musical called Hold It! in 1948. She won a Theatre World Award for being a "Promising Actress." After this, she performed in a show called All for Love in 1949. A talent scout from Warner Bros. saw her and signed her to a movie contract.
Film Career Highlights
Patrice Wymore's first movie was Tea for Two in 1950. She acted alongside Doris Day and Gordon MacRae. In the same year, she starred in Rocky Mountain with the famous actor Errol Flynn. They fell in love while making the movie.
Flynn and Wymore traveled and lived in Europe, often on Flynn's yacht, the USS Zaca. In October 1950, when she was 23, she married 41-year-old Errol Flynn in Nice, France.
Patrice kept acting after her marriage. She appeared in several films, including the musical I'll See You in My Dreams (1951), which was her second movie with Doris Day. She also played herself in the 1951 musical film Starlift.
In 1952, she had a role as a saloon singer in The Big Trees with Kirk Douglas. That same year, she was in the musical comedy She's Working Her Way Through College. In 1953, she appeared in She's Back on Broadway and starred with Randolph Scott in The Man Behind the Gun. After these films, her contract with Warner Bros. ended.
Patrice took a break from Hollywood after her daughter, Arnella Flynn, was born on December 25, 1953. Arnella later became a fashion model in Europe. In 1955, Patrice appeared with her husband Errol Flynn in the film King's Rhapsody.
Even though Errol Flynn was only in his forties, he was becoming quite ill. Patrice stopped acting for a while to care for him and raise their daughter. They settled on their property in Jamaica. They remained married until Errol Flynn's death on October 14, 1959.
Later Career and Life in Jamaica
After Errol Flynn passed away, Patrice Wymore returned to acting. She mostly performed in summer musicals like Carnival! and Guys and Dolls.
In 1960, she had a memorable role as Adele Elkstrom, the girlfriend of Frank Sinatra's character, in the popular film Ocean's 11.
Patrice also made three guest appearances on the TV show Perry Mason. She appeared in 1963 and again in 1965. In 1965, she was also cast in the TV soap opera Never Too Young. Her last film was Chamber of Horrors in 1966. Her final acting role was on the TV series F Troop in 1967, after which she retired.
Errol Flynn had left Patrice a large coconut plantation and a cattle ranch in Portland, Jamaica. After retiring from acting, she moved back to Jamaica. There, she opened a clothing store and a business that made wicker furniture. She continued to manage Flynn's estate and often attended events honoring him. Her grandson, Luke, said that she loved her farm as much as she loved movies.
Patrice Wymore died in Portland, Jamaica, on March 22, 2014, at the age of 87. She had been ill with a lung disease for a year. Her grandson, Luke Flynn, remembered her as a "tough, resilient, and elegant woman."
