Patrick DeLacy (born November 25, 1835 – died April 27, 1915) was a brave American soldier. He fought during the American Civil War. DeLacy received the Medal of Honor. This is the highest award for bravery a soldier can get in the United States.

He earned this special medal for his actions on May 6, 1864. This happened during a big fight called the Battle of the Wilderness in Virginia. He was officially given the award on April 24, 1894.

Life Story of Patrick DeLacy

Patrick DeLacy was born in Carbondale, Pennsylvania on November 25, 1835. When the Civil War began, he joined the 143rd Pennsylvania Infantry. He started as a private soldier.

Over time, he showed great courage and skill. He was promoted several times. He became a sergeant major, and then a lieutenant. He left the army in June 1865. Many years later, on June 8, 1987, he was officially given the rank of Captain. This was thanks to the efforts of Elizabeth Hicks Jaquinot.

His Medal of Honor Action

Patrick DeLacy earned his Medal of Honor for a very brave act. During the Battle of the Wilderness on May 6, 1864, he faced a Confederate soldier. This soldier was carrying the flag of the 1st South Carolina Infantry regiment.

DeLacy bravely shot the enemy flag-bearer. Then, he captured the enemy's flag. Taking an enemy's flag was a very important and dangerous act during battles. It showed great courage and helped boost the morale of his own side.

Later Life and Burial

Patrick DeLacy passed away on April 27, 1915. He was buried at Saint Catherine's Cemetery in Moscow, Pennsylvania.
