After finishing school, he studied at Corpus Christi College, Cambridge and the University of Edinburgh School of Law. He worked for the Scottish government from 1975 to 1978. In 1983, he became a lawyer in Scotland, joining the Faculty of Advocates.

A Career in Law

Lord Hodge has had a long and impressive career in law.

Early Legal Roles

From 1989 to 1991, he worked as a lawyer for the UK's Department of Energy. Then, from 1991 to 1996, he worked for the tax department, known as the Inland Revenue. In 1996, he became a Queen's Counsel, which is a special title for experienced lawyers.

As a Queen's Counsel, he mainly worked on cases involving business law, checking government decisions, and property law. He also served on the Scottish Law Commission from 1997 to 2003. This group helps to improve Scottish laws. From 2000 to 2005, he was a judge in the Courts of Appeal for Jersey and Guernsey. He also had a role with the Church of Scotland.

Becoming a Judge

In 2005, Patrick Hodge became a judge in Scotland, known as a Senator of the College of Justice. When he became a judge, he was given the special title Lord Hodge. He worked in both the main civil court (Court of Session) and the main criminal court (High Court of Justiciary) in Scotland.

On 1 October 2013, Lord Hodge was appointed as a Justice of the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom. This is the highest court in the UK. He took over from Lord Hope of Craighead. Then, on 27 January 2020, he became the Deputy President of the Supreme Court. He took over this role from Lord Reed, who became the President.

Work in Hong Kong

However, some lawmakers in the UK were worried about his appointment. This was because of a new national security law in Hong Kong. On 30 March 2022, Lord Hodge decided to resign from his role as a Hong Kong judge. He said his decision was due to concerns about the national security law.
