Patrick Stewart Hodge, known as Lord Hodge, was born on 19 May 1953. He is a British lawyer who currently serves as the Deputy President of the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom. This is a very important role in the UK's legal system.

Early Life and Education
Patrick Hodge grew up in Scotland. He went to Croftinloan School, which was a private junior boarding school. Later, he attended Trinity College, Glenalmond.
After finishing school, he studied at Corpus Christi College, Cambridge and the University of Edinburgh School of Law. He worked for the Scottish government from 1975 to 1978. In 1983, he became a lawyer in Scotland, joining the Faculty of Advocates.
A Career in Law
Lord Hodge has had a long and impressive career in law.
Early Legal Roles
From 1989 to 1991, he worked as a lawyer for the UK's Department of Energy. Then, from 1991 to 1996, he worked for the tax department, known as the Inland Revenue. In 1996, he became a Queen's Counsel, which is a special title for experienced lawyers.
As a Queen's Counsel, he mainly worked on cases involving business law, checking government decisions, and property law. He also served on the Scottish Law Commission from 1997 to 2003. This group helps to improve Scottish laws. From 2000 to 2005, he was a judge in the Courts of Appeal for Jersey and Guernsey. He also had a role with the Church of Scotland.
Becoming a Judge
In 2005, Patrick Hodge became a judge in Scotland, known as a Senator of the College of Justice. When he became a judge, he was given the special title Lord Hodge. He worked in both the main civil court (Court of Session) and the main criminal court (High Court of Justiciary) in Scotland.
On 1 October 2013, Lord Hodge was appointed as a Justice of the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom. This is the highest court in the UK. He took over from Lord Hope of Craighead. Then, on 27 January 2020, he became the Deputy President of the Supreme Court. He took over this role from Lord Reed, who became the President.
Work in Hong Kong
On 5 October 2020, Lord Hodge was asked to be a judge for Hong Kong's Court of Final Appeal. This court allows judges from other countries to work part-time. He started this role on 1 January 2021. He filled a spot left by an Australian judge, James Spigelman.
However, some lawmakers in the UK were worried about his appointment. This was because of a new national security law in Hong Kong. On 30 March 2022, Lord Hodge decided to resign from his role as a Hong Kong judge. He said his decision was due to concerns about the national security law.
Role with the Church of Scotland
The Queen appointed Lord Hodge to represent her at the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland in 2022. This is a special event for the Church of Scotland. King Charles III approved his reappointment for 2023. He was succeeded in this role by The Duke of Edinburgh on 10 March 2024.
Lord Hodge announced that he plans to retire from the Supreme Court on 31 December 2025.
Personal Life
Lord Hodge is married to Penelope Jane Wigin. They got married in 1983 and have two sons and one daughter. He enjoys opera and skiing. He is also a member of the Bruntsfield Links Golfing Society. Since 1998, he has been a Governor at Merchiston Castle School in Edinburgh.
