Patrick Huston is a talented British archer from Belfast, Northern Ireland. He was born on January 5, 1996. Patrick has competed in two Olympic Games for Team GB. He has also won several world championship titles at a young age.

Patrick trains full-time near the Lilleshall National Sporting Centre. His coach is Richard Priestman. He is also a founding member of the East Belfast Archery Club. As of January 2023, he was ranked 14th in the world for archery. You can learn more about his career on his official profile here.

Patrick Huston's Early Life

Patrick Huston grew up in Belfast. His parents, Adrian and Felicity Huston, were tax inspectors. Patrick started archery when he was eight years old. He was a student at Cabin Hill Primary School.

Discovering Archery

His teacher, Audrey Needham, was a British longbow champion. She helped Patrick discover his talent for archery. He joined the archery club at Campbell College. Patrick quickly became a key member of the team.

Training and Club Founding

When he was fourteen, Patrick joined the Northern Ireland Elite Squad. He trained part-time and competed in many tournaments. In September 2011, he started his own club. It was called the East Belfast Archery Club. The club is located at the Tullycarnet Community Centre. In 2014, Patrick left Campbell College. He moved to train full-time at the Lilleshall National Sporting Centre.

Patrick Huston's Archery Career

Patrick's international archery career began to shine in 2013. He achieved great success that year.

2013: A Breakthrough Year

  • He won two gold medals at the 2013 World Archery Youth Championships in Wuxi, China. These were for individual and team recurve events.
  • At the European Field Archery Championships in Terni, Italy, he won gold. This was in the Junior Men's Recurve individual event.
  • He also earned a bronze medal in the Recurve Junior Men's Team event.
  • Because of his early success, the British Olympic Committee (BOA) recognized him. He was nominated for the 2013 Olympic Athlete of the Year award.

2014-2015: Continued Success

In 2014, Patrick continued his winning streak. He won a team gold medal at the World Archery Field Championship in Zagreb, Croatia. This was in the Junior Men's Team event.

The 2015 season was also very successful.

  • He set a new world record for the 70-meter event. He scored 348 out of 360 points. This happened at the Archery GB National Series in Exmouth.
  • He won his first individual gold medal in a senior event. This was at the World Archery Cup series in Marrakech, Morocco.

2016: Olympic Debut in Rio

Before the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Patrick won a bronze medal. This was in the men's individual recurve at the 2016 European Championships in Nottingham. This win helped him secure a spot on Team GB's Olympic archery squad.

At the Rio Olympics, Patrick was the only male archer for Great Britain. He competed in the individual recurve tournament.

  • He scored 656 points in the classification round. This placed him 38th among 64 archers.
  • In the first knockout round, he beat Rick van der Ven from the Netherlands.
  • He then lost his next match to Ku Bon-chan of South Korea. Ku Bon-chan went on to win the gold medal.
  • Patrick finished 2016 with a bronze medal. This was in the Junior Men's Recurve event at the Dublin World field championships.

2017-2019: More Medals and Milestones

In September 2017, Patrick made history. He became the first archer to win the Great Britain National Series Recurve title three times in a row.

Other achievements in 2017 include:

  • Gold in Men's Recurve and Mixed Team Recurve at a World Ranking Event in Slovenia.
  • Silver in Men's Recurve and Bronze in Men's Recurve Team at the European Field Championships in Slovenia.
  • Bronze in the Recurve Mixed Team at the World Championships in Mexico City. He teamed up with Naomi Folkard.
  • Silver in Men's Recurve at the Indoor World Cup in Marrakech.
  • Silver in Men's Recurve at the World Cup stage in Luxembourg.

In 2018, he won a bronze medal in the Men's Team event at the World Cup in Antalya.

In May 2019, Patrick competed in the 2019 European Games in Minsk, Belarus. He won a silver medal in the Mixed Team Recurve event. In June 2019, Patrick and five other Archery GB teammates secured all six possible spots for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. This included a three-woman team and a three-man team. At the Aphrodite Cup in Cyprus, he won gold in the Mixed Team and silver in the Men's Recurve individual event.

2020-2023: Recent Achievements

The year 2020 had very few international competitions due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Tokyo 2020 Olympics were postponed to 2021.

In 2021, Patrick reached the final four in the Men's Recurve Individual competition at the Paris Archery World Cup Stage 3. In July 2021, he competed in his second Olympics, the delayed Tokyo 2020 Games.

  • He finished 5th in the Recurve Men's Team event.
  • He was 8th in the Mixed Team with Sarah Bettles.
