Early Life and Archery Beginnings
Patrick grew up in Belfast. He started learning archery at eight years old while attending Cabin Hill Primary School. His teacher, Audrey Needham, who was a British longbow champion, helped him discover his talent.
Patrick joined the archery club at Campbell College. By the time he was fourteen, he was part of the Northern Ireland Elite Squad. This meant he trained regularly and started competing in local and regional tournaments.
In September 2011, Patrick started his own club, the East Belfast Archery Club. It was based at the Tullycarnet Community Centre. In 2014, he left Campbell College to train full-time at the Lilleshall National Sporting Centre, focusing completely on his sport.
Patrick's Archery Career
Rising to International Fame
Patrick started gaining international attention in 2013. He won two gold medals at the 2013 World Archery Youth Championships in Wuxi, China. He won one for individual recurve and another for the team recurve event.
At the European Field Archery Championships in Terni, Italy, he also won a gold medal in the Junior Men's Recurve. He added a bronze medal with the Recurve Junior Men's Team. Because of his early success, the British Olympic Committee nominated him for the 2013 Olympic Athlete of the Year award.
More Success and Olympic Debut
In 2014, Patrick continued his winning streak. He won a team gold medal (Junior Men's Team) at the World Archery Field Championship in Zagreb, Croatia.
The year 2015 was also big for him. He set a new world record for the 70-meter event (scoring 348 out of 360 points) at the Archery GB National Series in Exmouth. He also won his first individual gold medal in the senior division at a World Archery Cup event in Marrakech, Morocco.
Before his first Olympic appearance in Rio de Janeiro, Patrick won a bronze medal at the 2016 European Championships in Nottingham. This helped him secure a spot on Team GB's Olympic archery team.
Competing at the Olympics
At the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio, Patrick was the only male archer for the British team. He competed in the individual recurve tournament. He scored 656 points in the ranking round, placing him 38th.
In the knockout stage, he won his first match against Rick van der Ven from the Netherlands. However, he then lost his next match to Ku Bon-chan of South Korea, who went on to win the gold medal. Later that year, he earned an individual bronze medal at the Dublin World Field Championships.
Continued Achievements
In September 2017, Patrick made history by becoming the first archer to win the Great Britain National Series Recurve title three times in a row. He also won two gold medals at a World Ranking Event in Slovenia: one for individual men's recurve and another for mixed team recurve.
At the European Field Championships in Slovenia, he won a silver medal in individual men's recurve and a bronze with the men's recurve team. At the World Championships in Mexico City, he won a bronze medal in the mixed team recurve with his teammate Naomi Folkard. He also secured silver medals at the Indoor World Cup in Marrakech and a World Cup stage in Luxembourg.
In 2018, Patrick won a bronze medal with the men's team at the World Cup in Antalya.
European Games and Tokyo Olympics
In May 2019, Patrick was chosen to compete in the 2019 European Games in Minsk, Belarus. He won a silver medal in the Mixed Team Recurve event. In June, he and five other Archery GB teammates secured all six possible places for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics (three for women and three for men). He also won gold in the Mixed Team and silver in the Men's Recurve individual at the Aphrodite Cup in Cyprus.
Due to the Covid pandemic, most international competitions were canceled in 2020, and the Tokyo 2020 Olympics were postponed.
In 2021, Patrick reached the final four in the Men's Recurve Individual competition at the Paris Archery World Cup Stage 3. In July, he competed in his second Olympics, the delayed Tokyo 2020 Games. He finished 5th with the Recurve Men's Team, 8th with the Mixed Team (with Sarah Bettles), and 33rd individually.
In 2022, Patrick had more success in the UK, winning the National Series for a record fifth time. He also won a bronze medal at the World Field Archery Championships in Birmingham, Alabama. By January 2023, he had achieved his career-best world ranking of 14th.
