Where is Pattan Located?
Pattan is in a special spot where three districts meet: Baramulla, Budgam, and Ganderbal. It is surrounded by different areas like Breng Block to the north and Kunzer Block to the south.
Pattan's Rich History
This old town was likely started by a famous Hindu king named Shankarvarman. He was the son of King Awantivarman. This happened in the 9th century AD.
How Pattan Got Its Name
According to an old book called Kalhana's Rajatarangini, King Shankarvarman built a town and named it Pattana. Some people call it 'Pathan' or 'The Path'. This is because it was an important route to Baramulla. A long time ago, Pattan was a busy place for trading wool, animals, and grains.
Ancient Temples in Pattan
King Shankarvarman built two temples in Pattan. Both were dedicated to the god Shiva. He named one temple Sugandhesa, after his wife Sugandha. The other temple was called Shankargaurishwar. North of these temples, there used to be a lake called "PumpeSar" (Lotus Lake). Today, houses stand where the lake once was.
Geography of Pattan
Pattan is located at coordinates 34°10′N 74°34′E / 34.17°N 74.57°E. It is about 1553 meters (5095 feet) above sea level. Pattan is one of the historic capitals of the Kashmir valley. It is located almost in the middle of the valley. The area around Pattan has the remains of four old palaces.
How to Get to Pattan
Pattan has its own Pattan railway station. You can also reach it through Hamre railway station and Mazhom railway station. The main big railway station, Jammu Tawi, is about 290 kilometers (180 miles) away. If you travel by road, Pattan is only 27 kilometers (17 miles) from Srinagar, which is the summer capital. The closest airport is Sheikh ul-Alam International Airport in Srinagar, also about 27 kilometers (17 miles) away.
Pattan's Population
According to the 2011 India census, Pattan had a population of 19,538 people. Out of these, 12,580 were males and 6,958 were females. The ability to read and write, called the literacy rate, in Pattan was 74.28%. This was higher than the average for the state at that time. For males, the literacy rate was about 83.92%, while for females, it was 55.91%. About 10.51% of the total population were children aged 0 to 6 years old.
