Paul Crandall (born September 20, 1802 – died January 9, 1889) was a farmer who lived in Lima, Wisconsin. He also served as a politician for one year. He was a member of the Whig Party, which was an important political group at the time.

Crandall represented parts of Rock County in the Wisconsin State Assembly during 1849. The State Assembly is like a group of lawmakers who help create rules and laws for the state. He was part of the second group of people who wrote the constitution for Wisconsin. This important document helped Wisconsin become a state in 1848.

Early Life and Important Work

Paul Crandall was born in 1802. He spent most of his life as a farmer. Farmers grow crops and raise animals, which was a very important job in the 1800s.

Helping Wisconsin Become a State

Before Wisconsin became a state, it needed a set of rules to govern itself. These rules are called a constitution. Paul Crandall was chosen to be part of a special meeting called a constitutional convention. At this meeting, he and others worked together to write the rules for Wisconsin. This was a very big step for Wisconsin to become an official state in the United States.

After Wisconsin became a state, Paul Crandall continued to be involved in his community.

Serving in the State Assembly

In 1849, Paul Crandall was elected to the Wisconsin State Assembly. This is a group of people who make laws for the state. He represented the towns of Beloit, Clinton, and Turtle in Rock County. He served for one year, helping to make decisions for the people of Wisconsin.

Supporting Farmers and Mechanics

Paul Crandall also cared about his community's growth. In 1851, he was chosen to be on the board of directors for a new group. This group was called the Rock County Agricultural Society and Mechanics Institute. A "board of directors" is a group of people who lead an organization. This society helped farmers and skilled workers (mechanics) in the area.

Later Life and Family

Later in his life, Paul Crandall and his wife, Sally Stillman, moved to Oregon. Moving to a new state like Oregon was a big adventure in those days! He passed away on January 9, 1889, in Salem, Oregon. He is buried in the Salem Pioneer Cemetery.

Paul Crandall's family continued to be involved in public service. His grandson, Thomas R. Coon, later became the mayor of Hood River, Oregon. A mayor is the leader of a city or town. Thomas R. Coon also served as a politician in the Oregon House of Representatives.
