Early Life and Career Beginnings
Paul Francis Tompkins was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was the fifth of six children. He started doing comedy when he was only 17 years old. He was part of a comedy duo with his friend Rick Roman.
In 1994, Tompkins moved to Los Angeles, California, to pursue his career. There, he met other comedians like Adam McKay and Jay Johnston. Tompkins and Johnston created a live sketch comedy show called "The Skates." This show got them noticed by Bob Odenkirk and David Cross, who hired them to write for the TV show Mr. Show with Bob and David in 1996.
