Paul Joseph Revere was an important soldier during the American Civil War. He was a general in the Union Army. He was born on September 10, 1832, and sadly passed away on July 4, 1863.
Growing Up
Paul Joseph Revere was born in Suffolk County, Massachusetts. He had a very famous grandfather! His grandfather was Paul Revere, the patriot from the American Revolutionary War. Paul Joseph Revere was named after him.
He was one of three grandsons of the original Paul Revere who fought for the Union in the Civil War. Another one was Joseph Warren Revere. Paul Joseph Revere studied at Harvard University and finished his studies in 1852.
A Soldier's Life
In July 1861, Paul Joseph Revere became a major in the 20th Massachusetts Infantry. This was a group of soldiers from Massachusetts.
In October 1861, he fought in the Battle of Ball's Bluff in Virginia. During this battle, he was hurt and captured by the Confederate States Army. He was later released in February 1862. He was officially exchanged for another soldier in May 1862.
In September 1862, Revere fought in the Battle of Antietam. He was wounded a second time in this battle. Sadly, his cousin, Edward Hutchinson Revere, who was also a grandson of the famous Paul Revere, was killed there.
By July 1863, Paul Joseph Revere was the colonel of his regiment. On July 2, 1863, he was badly wounded at the famous Battle of Gettysburg. He passed away two days later from his injuries.
