Paul Mebus (born June 9, 1920 – died December 11, 1993) was a German footballer. He was a key player in the West German team that won the 1954 FIFA World Cup. This was a huge victory for his country.

Mebus played six games for West Germany. He also played twice for the German 'B-team'. During his club career, he played for VfL 06 Benrath and 1. FC Köln.

Paul Mebus: A Football Star

Paul Mebus was a very talented German footballer. He was born in Düsseldorf-Benrath in 1920. He could play in different positions on the field. Sometimes he played as an inside forward, which is like a striker who also helps create goals. Other times, he played as a half back, which is similar to a midfielder or defender.

Playing Style and Strengths

Mebus was known for his excellent technical skills. Many people thought he was one of the best half backs in German football during the 1950s. He was very good at controlling the ball and passing it accurately.

World Cup Victory and Challenges

Paul Mebus was part of the West German team that won the 1954 FIFA World Cup in Switzerland. This was a very important moment for German football. Even though he was a skilled player, he didn't play in many games for the national team. This was partly because he faced strong competition from other talented players like Karl Mai.

The Hungary Match Incident

Mebus played in only one game during the 1954 World Cup. This was a tough match where West Germany lost 3–8 to Hungary. After such a big loss, the team's coach, Sepp Herberger, expected everyone to be very serious. Mebus was later seen singing in the shower. This made the coach unhappy, as he felt it wasn't the right mood after a defeat. Because of this, Mebus was not chosen to play for the national team again for some time.

Life After Playing Football

Paul Mebus stopped playing professional football in 1956. After his playing career, he became a football coach. He coached several teams in the 1960s and 1970s, including SV Troisdorf 05, SC Euskirchen, SV Schlebusch, Tura Hennef, TuS Höhenhaus, and Eitorf 09. He passed away in 1993.
