Paul Rogers (born March 22, 1917 – died October 6, 2013) was a famous English actor. He worked in movies, on stage, and on television. He was the very first person to win the BAFTA TV Award for Best Actor in 1955. He also won a Tony Award in 1967 for his role in the play The Homecoming.

Early Life and Acting Start

Paul Rogers was born in Plympton, a town in Devon, England. He went to Newton Abbot Grammar School. Later, he studied acting at the Michael Chekhov Theatre Studio.

From 1940 to 1946, Paul served in the Royal Navy during World War II. After the war, he returned to acting. He joined the Bristol Old Vic theatre company.

Becoming a Star

Paul Rogers became a well-known actor. He performed in many plays in London's West End and on Broadway in New York City. In 1967, he won a Tony Award for his amazing performance in Harold Pinter's play The Homecoming. He also played a main role, Sir, in the first Broadway show of Ronald Harwood's play The Dresser.

Working with the Royal Shakespeare Company

Paul Rogers was a long-time member of the Royal Shakespeare Company. This is a very famous theatre group. With them, he played important characters like Nick Bottom in A Midsummer Night's Dream. He also played Sir John Falstaff in Shakespeare's Henry IV plays.

Paul Rogers in Movies and TV

Paul Rogers appeared in many films. Some of his notable movies include Beau Brummel (1954) and Our Man in Havana (1959). He also acted in Billy Budd (1962) and The Shoes of the Fisherman (1968). His last film role was in Oscar and Lucinda in 1997.

He was also often seen on television. He appeared in shows like Producers' Showcase and Public Eye.

Personal Life

Paul Rogers was married twice. His first wife was Muriel Jocelyn Maire Wynne. They had two children together. Later, he married Rosalind Boxall, and they also had two children. Paul and Rosalind stayed married until she passed away in 2004.

Paul Rogers died in London in 2013. He was 96 years old.
