Paul Andrew Stalteri, born on October 18, 1977, is a Canadian former professional soccer player. He was a versatile player, often playing as a defender or midfielder. He spent most of his career playing in Germany. With Werder Bremen, he won both the league and cup in the 2003–04 season. This is called a 'double' win.

Paul also played in England's top league, the Premier League, for famous clubs like Tottenham Hotspur and Fulham. He was a key player for the Canadian national team. He played in a record 84 games for Canada and scored 7 goals. He was part of the team that won the CONCACAF Gold Cup in 2000. Today, Paul Stalteri works as an assistant coach for the Canadian national team.

Paul Stalteri's Early Life

Paul Stalteri's father is Italian, and his mother is Guyanese. When he was growing up, Paul's favorite soccer player was Paolo Maldini. The first live soccer game he ever saw was a Toronto Blizzard match. He also really enjoyed Physical Education at school.

While playing youth soccer in Ontario with a team called the Malton Bullets, Paul helped them win a championship at the Robbie International Soccer Tournament.

Paul Stalteri's Club Career

Paul Stalteri was a strong defender who could play on either side of the field. He could also play in the midfield. He started his soccer journey by playing one year of college soccer at Clemson University in 1996. After that first year, he decided to become a professional player.

He signed with the Toronto Lynx team while also attending York University. He played one season with the Lynx, scoring eight goals and making two assists. A scout from Werder Bremen in Germany noticed his talent and signed him.

Playing for Werder Bremen

After playing for two and a half seasons with Werder Bremen's reserve team, Paul made his first team debut in August 2000. He even scored a goal in his very first game against Energie Cottbus.

During the 2001–02 season, Paul became a regular player for Bremen. He continued to be a key part of the team in the 2002–03 season. In the 2003–04 season, his team, Werder Bremen, won the Bundesliga, which is Germany's top soccer league.

Moving to Tottenham Hotspur

In May 2005, Paul moved to England to play for Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League. He played a lot in the 2005–06 season. Spurs almost made it into the Champions League that year. However, when another player, Pascal Chimbonda, joined the team, Paul's chances to play became fewer.

On March 4, 2007, Paul came into a game as a substitute against London rivals West Ham United. He scored a goal in the very last minute, helping Tottenham win an amazing game 4–3. This was a big moment for him, as he hadn't played much that season. He also scored goals for Spurs against Manchester City and Leicester City.

Loan to Fulham and Retirement

On January 31, 2008, Paul went to Fulham on a loan until the end of the season. He played his first game for Fulham on February 9, 2008, against Middlesbrough. After returning to Tottenham, his contract ended on December 21, 2008.

Paul then went back to Germany and joined Borussia Mönchengladbach. He played alongside his Canadian teammate Rob Friend there. Paul Stalteri announced that he was retiring from playing soccer on March 20, 2013, when he was 35 years old.

This made him the Canadian player with the most international games played, a record that was later broken by Julian De Guzman in 2015.

He became the team captain for a friendly game against Venezuela on June 1, 2007. He remained captain for all international games after that, including the entire 2007 CONCACAF Gold Cup. On September 7, 2010, Paul played his 83rd game for Canada in a 2–1 win over Honduras. This officially made him the all-time leader in appearances for the Canada men's national team.
