Pauline (Japanese: ポリーン, Hepburn: Porīn) is a character from the Donkey Kong and Mario video game series by Nintendo. She was created by Japanese video game designer Shigeru Miyamoto. Pauline first appeared in Donkey Kong in 1981. In that game, she was a character who needed rescuing. She was held by Donkey Kong at a construction site.
How Pauline Was Created
Pauline was made by Shigeru Miyamoto and other developers for the 1981 arcade game Donkey Kong. She was the first female character in a video game who could speak. She is also a famous example of a "damsel in distress," which means a female character who needs to be saved.
Originally, Pauline was called Lady, . The game showed her as Mario's girlfriend. The name Pauline was later given to her. It came from the girlfriend of Nintendo of America's warehouse manager, Don James. This name was then used for toys and books after the game came out. It was also used for the NES version of the game. However, some ads for the Game & Watch version called her Louise.
In 2017, the producer of Super Mario Odyssey, Yoshiaki Koizumi, shared some facts about Pauline. He said that Pauline sang the game's main song, "Jump Up, Super Star!". He also mentioned that Pauline was interested in jazz music. This was the first time a Mario game had a song with vocals.
Pauline's Game Appearances
