Early Life and Beginnings
Pauline Henry moved from Jamaica to the United Kingdom when she was 10 years old. She settled in London. Before she became a professional singer, she worked as a hair stylist and make-up artist. She also sometimes worked as a session singer, which means she sang for recordings without being a main band member.
Music Career Highlights
Forming The Chimes
In early 1988, two musicians from Edinburgh, Mike Peden and James Locke, wanted to start a band. They had written some songs but needed a singer. They heard about Pauline Henry and liked her voice.
At first, Pauline was just going to sing their songs. But soon, she started helping to write the songs too. The group decided to call themselves The Chimes. A record company called CBS Records signed them after seeing them perform live.
Success with The Chimes
The Chimes released their first song, "1-2-3", in August 1989. It reached number 60 in the UK music charts. Their cover of "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For" was a much bigger hit. It reached number 6 in the UK the next year.
The Chimes' first album, also called The Chimes, came out in 1990. It was very popular, reaching the top 20 in the UK, Australia, Austria, and New Zealand. The band split up in 1991.
Solo Career and Albums
After The Chimes, Pauline Henry started her solo career. Her first solo song, "Too Many People", reached number 38 in the UK in September 1993.
Pauline's first solo album, Pauline, was released in 1994. It reached the top 50 in both the UK and Australia. She released a second solo album in 1996 called Do Over. This album featured cover versions of songs by other artists.
Later Years and Studies
After her second album, Pauline took a break from recording music. During this time, she went to university. She earned a degree in law and a master's degree in Intellectual Property Law.
In 2016, Pauline recorded a new version of The Chimes' song "Heaven". This new version was part of a special re-release of The Chimes' only album.
