Pauline Tinsley was born in Wigan, a town near Manchester, England, in March 1928. She loved music and studied at the Northern School of Music. Later, she continued her training in London with famous teachers like Joan Cross and Dame Eva Turner.
Her first big performance, called a "debut," was in 1961. She sang the role of Desdemona in an opera called Otello by Rossini. She also performed in other important operas by composers like Verdi and Wagner.
Her Opera Career
Pauline Tinsley joined the Welsh National Opera in 1962. A year later, in 1963, she also started performing with the English National Opera. She became very good at singing in operas by famous composers such as Verdi, Puccini, and Richard Strauss.
In 1965, she joined The Royal Opera, Covent Garden, which is one of the most famous opera houses in the world. There, she played many important characters. These included the Kostelnička in Jenůfa and the main roles in Elektra and Tosca.
Pauline Tinsley also performed in many other places around the world. She sang at the Glyndebourne Festival Opera in England, the New York City Opera in the United States, and in cities like Hamburg, Zurich, and Vancouver. People admired her for her strong acting and her clear, powerful voice that never seemed to get tired.
She even appeared on television! In 1983, she was in a BBC TV show of the opera Orpheus in the Underworld.
Pauline Tinsley passed away on May 10, 2021, at the age of 93. She had two children, John and Julia, with her husband, George Neighbour.
