Paulo Kassoma's Life Story
Early Life and Education
Paulo Kassoma was born in Rangel, a part of Luanda, the capital city of Angola. His parents, Paulo Kassoma and Laurinda Katuta, came from a town called Bailundo in Huambo Province. He chose to study electromechanical engineering in college.
Starting in Government
Mr. Kassoma began his career in government in 1978. He was the Deputy Minister of Defense for Weapons and Technology. This role involved helping with military equipment. He worked for the government of the People's Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA).
Later, he became the Deputy Minister of Transport and Communication from 1988 to 1989. He then became the full Minister of Transport and Communications from 1989 to 1992. After that, he was appointed Minister of Territorial Administration in April 1992.
Serving as Governor
Mr. Kassoma later became the Governor of Huambo Province. He was also the First Secretary of the MPLA party in that province. In February 2002, he made an offer to white farmers from Zimbabwe. These farmers had lost their land due to land reforms in their country.
Kassoma offered them 10,000 hectares (about 25,000 acres) of unused farmland in Huambo. He hoped they would grow maize (corn) there. He believed this would help Huambo's economy grow and develop. In December 2003, he was chosen to be part of the MPLA Political Bureau, which is an important leadership group within the party.
Becoming Prime Minister
In September 2008, the MPLA party won the legislative election. The party's leaders then chose Paulo Kassoma to become the new Prime Minister. He took over from Fernando da Piedade Dias dos Santos.
President José Eduardo dos Santos officially appointed Kassoma as Prime Minister on September 30, 2008. At the same time, he stopped being the Governor of Huambo Province. Kassoma was sworn in at the Presidential Palace in Luanda. He told reporters that his main goal would be to speed up the rebuilding of Angola. He also said he was proud but a little sad to leave the people of Huambo.
His new government was formed on October 1. It had 35 members, and 17 of them were new to government roles.
Changes in Leadership
In January 2010, Angola adopted a new constitution. This new law removed the position of Prime Minister. Because of this change, Paulo Kassoma was then named the President of the National Assembly. He took over this role from Fernando da Piedade Dias dos Santos, who became the Vice-President of Angola.
After the 2012 legislative election, Fernando da Piedade Dias dos Santos was elected to replace Kassoma as President of the National Assembly. This happened on September 27, 2012.
Later Career Roles
On June 28, 2013, Mr. Kassoma was chosen to be the Chairman of the Board of Directors for Banco Espírito Santo Angola. This is a large bank in Angola. Because of this new role, he left his seat in the National Assembly on July 18, 2013. He also served as the Secretary-General of the MPLA party from August 2016 to September 2018.
