Paulo Kassoma's Early Life and Career
Paulo Kassoma was born in Rangel, a part of Luanda, the capital city of Angola. His parents, Paulo Kassoma and Laurinda Katuta, came from Bailundo, a town in Huambo Province. He studied electromechanical engineering, which involves both electrical and mechanical systems.
Government Roles and Leadership
Kassoma began his government career in 1978. He was the Deputy Minister of Defense for Weapons and Technology. This role was in the government of the People's Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA).
He later became Deputy Minister of Transport and Communication from 1988 to 1989. After that, he served as the Minister of Transport and Communications from 1989 to 1992. On April 9, 1992, he was appointed Minister of Territorial Administration.
Governor of Huambo Province
Kassoma also served as the Governor of Huambo Province. He was also the First Secretary of the MPLA in that province. As Governor, he worked to help the region grow. For example, in 2002, he invited farmers from Zimbabwe to settle in Huambo. He offered them land to grow maize, hoping to boost Huambo's economy.
In December 2003, Kassoma was chosen for the MPLA Political Bureau. This is a very important group within the party.
Becoming Prime Minister of Angola
In September 2008, the MPLA party won the 2008 Angolan legislative election. After this victory, the MPLA Political Bureau chose Paulo Kassoma to be the next Prime Minister. He took over from Fernando da Piedade Dias dos Santos.
On September 30, 2008, President José Eduardo dos Santos officially appointed Kassoma as Prime Minister. At the same time, Kassoma left his role as Governor of Huambo Province. He was sworn in at the Presidential Palace in Luanda. Kassoma stated that his main goal would be to speed up the country's reconstruction. He felt proud but also a bit sad to leave the people of Huambo.
His new government was formed on October 1. It included 35 members, with 17 of them being new to government roles.
Transition to National Assembly President
A new constitution was approved by the National Assembly on January 21, 2010. This new constitution removed the position of Prime Minister. Because of this change, Kassoma was then named the President of the National Assembly. He replaced Fernando da Piedade Dias dos Santos, who became the Vice-President of Angola.
After the 2012 Angolan legislative election, Piedade was elected to take Kassoma's place. This happened on September 27, 2012.
Later Career in Banking
On June 28, 2013, Paulo Kassoma was chosen for a new role. He became the Chairman of the Board of Directors for Banco Espírito Santo Angola. This is a major bank in Angola. Because of this new position, he left his seat in the National Assembly on July 18, 2013.
