Political Career Highlights
In 1971, Fernando da Piedade Dias dos Santos joined the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA). This political party played a big role in Angola's fight for independence.
After Angola became independent from Portugal in 1975, he started working in the police force. By 1978, he was a division head. In 1981, he moved to the Ministry of the Interior, becoming a Deputy Minister in 1984.
The next year, he was chosen as a member of the MPLA-Workers' Party congress. He also became a colonel in the Angolan military. Later, he joined the People's Assembly, which led to many government jobs.
Serving as Prime Minister
Fernando da Piedade Dias dos Santos was the Interior Minister starting in 1999. In November 2002, he was chosen to be the Prime Minister. He officially took office on December 6, 2002. The position of Prime Minister had been empty for three years before he took it.

Leading the National Assembly
In the September 2008 election, the MPLA party won by a lot. Fernando da Piedade Dias dos Santos was elected to a seat in the National Assembly.
After this election, the MPLA party decided he should become the president of the National Assembly. This happened on September 26, 2008. Paulo Kassoma took over as Prime Minister. On September 30, the new members of the National Assembly were sworn in. Fernando da Piedade Dias dos Santos was then officially elected as president of the National Assembly.
Becoming Vice President
On January 21, 2010, the National Assembly approved a new constitution. This new law gave the president more power. It also removed the job of Prime Minister and stopped popular elections for president. Fernando da Piedade Dias dos Santos called this a "historic moment."
President dos Santos then appointed him to the new role of Vice-President of Angola on February 3, 2010. Because he had always been a close and powerful helper to President dos Santos, many thought he might become the next president. However, dos Santos was chosen to run for president again in 2012, showing he wasn't planning to retire yet.
In 2012, Manuel Vicente, who used to lead the state oil company Sonangol, was chosen as the likely next Vice President. Vicente became Vice President on September 26, 2012, taking over from Fernando da Piedade Dias dos Santos. The very next day, on September 27, 2012, Fernando da Piedade Dias dos Santos was again elected as President of the National Assembly.
