Paulo Mendes da Rocha (born October 25, 1928 – died May 23, 2021) was a famous Brazilian architect. He was known for designing many important buildings, mostly in Brazil.
Paulo Mendes da Rocha studied architecture at Mackenzie Presbyterian University. He graduated in 1954. He started designing buildings in 1957. Many of his buildings were made using concrete. This style is sometimes called "Brazilian Brutalism". It allowed buildings to be built quickly and without costing too much. He designed many important cultural buildings in São Paulo. People say his work helped make the city better and more lively.
Paulo Mendes da Rocha also taught at the Architecture College of the University of São Paulo. This school is known as FAU-USP. He taught there until 1998. Another Brazilian architect, Vilanova Artigas, influenced his work. Paulo Mendes da Rocha received many big awards for his designs. These include the Mies van der Rohe Prize in 2000 and the Pritzker Prize in 2006. He also won the Golden Lion for his life's work at the Venice Biennale in 2016.
Paulo Mendes da Rocha passed away on May 23, 2021. He was 92 years old when he died in São Paulo.
