History of Peñalolén
Peñalolén was officially created as a commune on November 15, 1984. This was an important step in organizing the area.
Population and Area
According to a census taken in 2002, Peñalolén covers an area of 54.2 square kilometers. At that time, it had 216,060 residents. This included 105,528 men and 110,532 women.
The entire commune is considered an urban area, meaning it's a city or town with many people living close together. Between 1992 and 2002, the population of Peñalolén grew by 20.2%. This means 36,279 more people moved to the area during that time.

How Peñalolén is Governed
