Peñuelas barrio-pueblo is a special part of the town of Peñuelas in Puerto Rico. It is the main administrative center, like the "heart" of the municipality. In 2010, about 1,422 people lived here.
In Puerto Rico, just like in Spain, each town has a special area called a pueblo. This pueblo usually has a central plaza (a town square), important government buildings like the city hall, and a Catholic church. Every year, fun festivals called Fiestas patronales (patron saint festivals) are held in the central plaza.

The Central Plaza and Its Church
The central plaza, or town square, is a very important place in Peñuelas barrio-pueblo. It's where people gather for fun events, relax, and socialize from morning until night.
Long ago, in the early 1800s, Spanish laws called the Laws of the Indies guided life in Puerto Rico. These laws said that the plaza should be big enough for celebrations and parties. They also stated that the streets around the plaza should have comfortable walkways. These walkways would protect people from the sun and rain.
Right across from the central plaza in Peñuelas barrio-pueblo is the Parroquia San José. This is a Roman Catholic church, an important landmark in the community.
History of Peñuelas Pueblo
After the Spanish–American War, Spain gave Puerto Rico to the United States. This happened under the Treaty of Paris of 1898. Puerto Rico then became an unincorporated territory of the United States.
In 1899, the United States government took a census (a count of the population) in Puerto Rico. This census showed that 1,129 people lived in Peñuelas Pueblo at that time.
