Robert Peapo "Peabo" Bryson (born April 13, 1951) is an American singer and songwriter. He is famous for singing soulful songs, often with female singers. Some of his well-known duets include "A Whole New World" with Regina Belle and "Beauty and the Beast" with Celine Dion. These songs were featured in popular Disney animated movies. Peabo Bryson has won two Grammy Awards for his music.

Early Life and Music Beginnings

Peabo Bryson was born as Robert Peapo Bryson in Greenville, South Carolina. He spent part of his childhood on his grandfather's farm. His mother loved music and often took the family to concerts. This helped him develop his own passion for music.

Starting His Career

Bryson began his professional singing career at just 14 years old. He sang backup for a local group called Al Freeman and the Upsetters. It was hard for Freeman to say Bryson's French West-Indian name, Peapo. So, Bryson started performing as "Peabo."

A couple of years later, he toured with another band, Moses Dillard and the Tex-Town Display. His big break came during a recording session in Atlanta. A record label manager, Eddie Biscoe, was impressed by Bryson's voice. Biscoe signed Bryson as a writer, producer, and arranger. He also encouraged Bryson to sing his own songs.

In 1976, Bryson released his first song, "Underground Music." His first album, Peabo, came out soon after. Even though it was only popular in his region, he signed with Capitol Records in 1977.

Peabo Bryson's Hit Songs and Duets

Peabo Bryson is known for many hit songs. Some of his popular solo songs include "Feel the Fire" (1977) and "Can You Stop the Rain" (1991). In 1984, "If Ever You're in My Arms Again" became his first song to reach the Top 10 on the pop charts.

Famous Duets

Bryson is especially famous for his duets. He recorded a successful album of romantic duets with Roberta Flack in 1983, called Born to Love.

He also had two big hit duets with Regina Belle:

Bryson and Belle sang together four times in total.

Disney Movie Songs

Peabo Bryson became well-known for singing songs from Disney movies. He won a Grammy Award in 1992 for "Beauty and the Beast" with Celine Dion. The next year, in 1993, he won another Grammy for "A Whole New World" with Regina Belle. These songs helped make him a global star.

In 1998, Bryson also sang "Dream (Twinken's Tune)" for the movie Barney's Great Adventure: An Original Motion Picture Musical Soundtrack.

Later Career and Life Events

Peabo Bryson has also performed in theater and opera. He played the role of "Sportin' Life" in a version of Porgy and Bess.

In 2002, the music video for his song "Beauty and the Beast" was included on the Blu-ray edition of the movie. His "A Whole New World" music video was also on the DVD release of Aladdin. His album Missing You was released in 2007.

On September 4, 2016, the cities of Charleston, South Carolina and North Charleston, South Carolina declared it "Peabo Bryson Day." This was part of the LowCountryJazzFest.

In 2018, Bryson released a new album called Stand For Love. It was produced by famous music producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis.

Personal Life and Health

Peabo Bryson is married to singer Tanya Boniface. He has a daughter from a previous relationship and three grandchildren.

In April 2019, Bryson had a heart attack. He was taken to an Atlanta hospital and was in stable condition. He has since made a full recovery and is doing well.
