Early Life and Music Beginnings
Peabo Bryson was born as Robert Peapo Bryson in Greenville, South Carolina. He spent a lot of his childhood on his grandfather's farm. His love for music came from his mother, who often took the family to concerts. They saw many famous Black artists of that time.
Peabo started his music career at just 14 years old. He sang backup for a local group called Al Freeman and the Upsetters. It was hard for Freeman to say Bryson's French West-Indian name, Peapo, so Bryson started performing as "Peabo."
When he was 16, he left home to tour with another local band, Moses Dillard and the Tex-Town Display. His big break came during a recording session in Atlanta. A record label manager, Eddie Biscoe, was impressed by Peabo's singing. Biscoe signed Peabo to a contract to write, produce, and arrange music. He also encouraged Peabo to sing his own songs.
In 1976, Peabo Bryson released his first song, "Underground Music." His first album, Peabo, came out soon after. Even though it was only a success in his region, he signed with Capitol Records in 1977.
