Pearl Harbour is a small harbour located in Manapouri, a town on the South Island of New Zealand. It sits right at the start of the Waiau River, which flows out of Lake Manapouri.

Why is it Called Pearl Harbour?
This harbour got its name soon after a very important event in history. In 1941, during World War II, there was a famous attack on Pearl Harbor in Hawaii. The people in New Zealand decided to name this small harbour after the famous one in Hawaii to remember the event.

Their destination is the Manapouri Hydroelectric Power Station, which is on the West Arm of the lake. This power station uses water to create electricity.
Tourist Gateway
Tourists also use Pearl Harbour as a starting point for adventures. Ferries take visitors to see the Manapouri Hydroelectric Power Station. From there, people can continue their journey to Doubtful Sound / Patea. Doubtful Sound is a stunning fiord located about 10 kilometres (6 miles) beyond the West Arm of the lake. It is a very popular place to visit in New Zealand.
