Pechina is a small town in Spain. It is a municipality located in the Province of Almería. This province is part of the Andalusia region in southern Spain. Pechina is built on the site of an ancient town called Urci.
A Look Back in Time
Pechina has a very interesting history! Long ago, it was known as Bajjāna in Arabic. It became an important center for a group of people from Yemen. This happened during the time of the Umayyad caliphate, a powerful Islamic empire in Spain.
This self-governing community was founded before the year 886. It was known as the ursh al-Yaman. People of the Jewish faith also lived there and shared in the town's success.
In 922, Pechina officially became part of the caliphate. It had a special fort called a ribat. Pechina even had its own navy! This navy was used for sea adventures and important missions for the Umayyad empire.
Between 939 and 944, Pechina's navy took part in four expeditions. These were against groups like the Franks, Idrisids, and Fatimids. However, by the year 955, Pechina became less important. The nearby city of Almería grew much larger and more powerful.
