Pedreña is a lovely village located in the region of Cantabria, in northern Spain. It is part of the Marina de Cudeyo area. In 2010, about 1,454 people called Pedreña home.
Even though it's about 18 kilometers (11 miles) by road from the city of Santander, Pedreña is actually very close across the water. It sits on a small piece of land that sticks out into the bay, only about 2 kilometers (1.2 miles) from Santander. You can easily travel between Pedreña and Santander by boat!
Pedreña is famous for being the home of the legendary golfer Seve Ballesteros (1957–2011). The main street in the village is even named after him.

A Look at Pedreña's History
Pedreña has a rich history, with interesting stories and discoveries.
Ancient Church and Cemetery
The Pedreña Cemetery is built on the ruins of a very old church. This church was known as San Pedro de Ambojo. It was a medieval church, built sometime in the 14th or 15th century. Sadly, this old church was destroyed during the Spanish Civil War and left in ruins.
Medieval Coin Discovery
In 1983, during some building work, a special discovery was made. Workers found about 72 silver medieval coins hidden in slab tombs. These coins were from the late 11th and early 12th centuries. This important collection is now kept safe at the Regional Museum of Prehistory and Archaeology. Because of this find, the cemetery was recognized as a site of Cultural Interest in 2002.
The Modern Church
The current parish church, called Iglesia de San Pedro, was built in the 1950s. Its design tries to bring back the traditional religious style of the area. The artwork inside the church was created by the artist Fernando Calderon, who was inspired by Byzantine frescoes.
Local Traditions and Festivals
One of the main celebrations in Pedreña is the San Pedro Pedreña festival. This traditional event happens every year on June 29th, near the golf course. Many people from Pedreña and nearby towns come to enjoy the festivities. Fishing is also a popular activity in Pedreña.

Location and Surroundings
Pedreña is located on a peninsula, a piece of land surrounded by water on three sides. It's only about 2 kilometers (1.2 miles) across the bay from Santander. The main road, called CA-141, connects Pedreña to the village of Somo. Somo is just across the mouth of the Miera River to the east. The village of Rubayo is about 3 kilometers (1.9 miles) south along this road.
Coastal Features
Pedreña has a small marina right on the seafront. This marina is only about 20 meters (66 feet) from the famous golf course. A regatta, which is a boat race, is also held here, adding to the lively atmosphere of the bay.

Seve Ballesteros, Golf Legend
The most famous person from Pedreña is the legendary golfer Seve Ballesteros (1957–2011). He was born and also passed away in this village. Seve learned to play golf on the beaches near his home. He often practiced when he was supposed to be in school! He mainly used a 3-iron golf club that his older brother Manuel gave him when he was just eight years old. The main avenue in Pedreña is named after him to honor his achievements.
Other Notable Athletes
Pedreña has also been home to other skilled golfers, including Ramón Sota Ocejo (1938–2012), who was Seve Ballesteros's uncle. Another golfer from the village is José Manuel Carriles Corino (1963). Beyond golf, Pedreña is connected to the hockey player Pilar González Noval (1959) and the basketball player David Doblas (1981).
