Pedro Campaña (1503–1586) was a talented painter from Flanders, a region that is now part of Belgium. He lived during the exciting Renaissance period, a time when art and learning became very important. His real name was Pieter de Kempeneer. He spent most of his life painting in Italy and Spain.

About Pedro Campaña's Life

Pedro Campaña was born in Brussels. He learned to paint from an artist named Bernard Van Orley. He spent his early years in Italy, where he carefully studied the famous paintings of Raphael. He even said he was Raphael's student!

In 1530, he helped with a special event. He painted a triumphal arch, which is a large, arch-shaped monument. This arch was built for the crowning of Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor in Bologna. After this, he moved to Spain. He stayed in Spain for most of his life, only returning to Brussels around 1563 or 1565.

Starting an Art School

From 1537 to 1562, Pedro Campaña worked with other artists. These included Luis de Vargas and a sculptor named Torregiano. Together, they started an art school in Seville, Spain. This school later became a famous art academy. One of their students was a painter named Luis de Morales.

Important Artworks in Seville

Pedro Campaña painted many important artworks in Seville. For a monastery, he created a large painting called Descent from the Cross in 1548. This painting is now in the main Seville Cathedral.

He also painted other works for the Seville Cathedral. These include two paintings showing the Purification of the Virgin and the Resurrection. He also created the impressive main altarpiece for the church of Santa Ana. You can find his paintings in other churches in Seville too, like San Isidoro, San Pedro, Santa Catalina, and San Juan de la Palma.

One of his last jobs was to fix and repaint a chapel for an important person in Seville named Hernando de Jaen. The famous painter Murillo admired Campaña's work so much that he asked to be buried near Campaña's painting, Descent from the Cross. Murillo was buried in the Church of Santa Cruz, right near the painting. However, the entire church was later destroyed during the Napoleonic Wars, and the tomb was lost.
