Early Career with Real Madrid
Pedro Contreras started his football journey in the youth system of Real Madrid. He was born in Madrid, Spain. In 1998, he earned a UEFA Champions League winner's medal. This was a big achievement, even though he didn't play in any games that season.
He spent four years playing for Real Madrid's B-team, called Real Madrid Castilla. He also played in four first-team games for Real Madrid during the 1998–99 season. In the 1996–97 season, he was loaned to Rayo Vallecano. There, he played almost every league match, but the team was moved down to a lower league.
Time at Málaga
In the 1999–2000 season, Contreras moved to Málaga. He quickly became the main goalkeeper for the team. From 1999 to 2003, he only missed six matches in the top division. This shows how important he was to Málaga.
Playing for Real Betis
Contreras joined Real Betis in the summer of 2003. In his first season, he played in 22 league games. However, in the next season, he didn't play any games. This was because of an injury and another goalkeeper, Toni Doblas, playing well.
In the 2005–06 season, Pedro played in both the UEFA Cup and the Champions League. He even managed to keep a clean sheet against Chelsea. A clean sheet means the opposing team didn't score any goals. Betis won that game 1–0 in the group stage.
Later Career and Retirement
In 2007–08, Contreras was loaned to Cádiz, another team in Andalusia. After that season, he left Real Betis and decided to retire from playing football.
After retiring, he returned to his former club, Málaga, but in a new role. He became a goalkeeping coach. He later resigned from this coaching position in January 2020.
Playing for Spain
Pedro Contreras was part of the Spanish national team for the 2002 FIFA World Cup. He was the third-choice goalkeeper for the team. He was added to the squad at the last minute. This happened because the first-choice goalkeeper, Santiago Cañizares, got injured unexpectedly.
Contreras played in only one international match for Spain. This is called getting a "cap." His only cap was in a game against Paraguay on October 16, 2002. The game ended in a 0–0 draw.
