Pedro Montt's Early Life
Pedro Montt was the son of Manuel Montt Torres, who was also a president of Chile. His mother was Rosario Montt Goyenechea. Pedro studied law and finished his studies in 1870.
Becoming a Politician
In 1876, Pedro Montt was chosen to be a member of the Chamber of Deputies. This is like being a representative in the country's parliament. He later became the president of this group in 1885.
Montt also worked in the government of President José Manuel Balmaceda. But in 1891, he took part in a big political change that removed Balmaceda from power. After this, he went to the United States. There, he first worked for the new government and later became a special representative for Chile.
Pedro Montt's Presidency
Pedro Montt tried to become president in 1901 but did not win. However, in 1906, he was elected president by a large number of votes. He was the candidate for the National Union group.
Challenges and Developments
Early in his presidency, his government faced big worker protests. Sadly, one event, known as the Santa María School massacre, involved the army and led to many deaths.
Despite these challenges, Montt's government supported important projects. They helped build a railway that ran across the entire country. They also encouraged the production of nitrates and copper, which were important resources for Chile. However, his government did not do much to make life better for ordinary people.
Supporting a Young Talent
In 1909, a very talented young pianist named Claudio Arrau played music for President Montt. Montt was so impressed by Arrau's performance that he gave him a special grant. This money from the Chilean government helped Arrau study music in Europe for ten years.
End of His Term
In 1910, Pedro Montt left Chile to get medical treatment in Germany. Sadly, he passed away there before he could return to his home country.
