Peebinga is a town and area in the Australian state of South Australia. It is located in a region known as the Murray Mallee. Peebinga was once the end point of a railway line. This railway helped open up the area for farming and grazing.

Peebinga: A Glimpse into History
Peebinga was officially established as a town on September 25, 1924. It became a locality on September 28, 2000. The town was surveyed right next to the railway station.
The Railway Story
The Peebinga railway line was built in 1914. This was part of a big project by the state government. The goal was to develop the Murray Mallee region. This allowed more land to be used for grazing animals and growing crops.
When the railway was built, it ended in a wild, undeveloped area. This area was known as Peebinga. The town was then planned and built near the railway station in 1924. The railway line closed down in 1990.
How Peebinga Got Its Name
The name Peebinga comes from an Aboriginal word. It means a rock hole in the area. Governor of South Australia, Day Bosanquet, named the district in 1912. Later, Governor Tom Bridges named the town Peebinga after the district.
The area also includes a historic place called Mootatunga. Mootatunga was the second-to-last stop on the railway line. Today, it is next to the Peebinga Conservation Park. It is also near the Browns Well Highway, about 5 kilometers west of Peebinga. Mootatunga is an Aboriginal name for a tribe's totem. This town was also surveyed in 1924.
Peebinga Today
Over the years, some services in Peebinga have closed. The post office opened in 1926 but closed in 1986. The Peebinga school opened in 1938 but is now also closed.
Peebinga is part of different government areas. It is in the federal Division of Barker. For state government, it is in the Electoral district of Chaffey. Locally, it belongs to the District Council of Loxton Waikerie.
