Meribah's History and Name

How Meribah Got Its Name

The town of Meribah was officially created on November 26, 1914. It was named after a nearby water source, which was called Meribah. This name comes from the Bible. In the Bible, Meribah is a place where Moses "struck the rock and water gushed forth." This means the name connects the town to a story about water appearing in a dry place.

Meribah and the Railway

In 1913, Meribah was an important stop on the Barmera railway line. For a short time, it was the very end of the railway line. This meant trains would stop there before the tracks were built further. Later that same year, the railway line was extended to Paringa.

The Post Office

Meribah also had its own post office. It first opened in March 1916. The post office helped people send and receive mail in the town. However, it eventually closed down in June 1985.
